Chairman of the Law Enforcement and Public Safety Committee, Abe Uchitelle, and Deputy Chair Gina Hansut offer the following:

WHEREAS,thisresolutionhasbeensubmittedat the request ofthe Acting CountyExecutiveon behalf of the Public Defender’s Office; and

WHEREAS, the Public Defender’s Office provides legal representation to indigent legal defendants; and

WHEREAS, the position of Assistant Public Defender will be responsible for representing indigent clients in family cases in all Ulster County courts from arraignment through resolution; and

WHEREAS, this Assistant Public Defender position will have an annual salary of $80,625; and

WHEREAS, the Acting Public Defender requests the 2023 Ulster County Budget be amended to include one additional Assistant Public Defender position; and

WHEREAS, the Assistant Public Defender position and associated fringe benefits will be funded (by reimbursement) by the New York State Office of Indigent Legal Services (NYSOILS) Distribution #11 grant (Contract #C110051); and

WHEREAS, the purpose of the NYSOILS Distribution #11 grant is to improve the quality of mandated indigent legal representation and to reduce excessive caseloads in indigent legal service provider programs; and

  WHEREAS, in order to reflect this, an amendment of the 2023 budget is necessary; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, that the 2023 County Budget is hereby amended as follows:
