Chair of the Legislature Tracey A. Bartels offers the following:

WHEREAS,thisresolutionhasbeensubmittedat the request oftheCountyExecutiveon behalf of the Public Defender’s Office; and

WHEREAS, Public Defender’s Office provides legal representation to indigent legal defendants; and

WHEREAS, the position of Assistant Public Defender will be responsible for representing indigent clients in criminal cases in all Ulster County courts from arraignment through resolution; and

WHEREAS, each Assistant Public Defender position will have an annual salary of $85,000; and

WHEREAS, the Public Defender requests the 2022 Ulster County Budget be amended to include two additional Assistant Public Defender positions; and

WHEREAS, the two Assistant Public Defender positions and associated fringe benefits will be funded (by reimbursement) by the New York State Office of Indigent Legal Services (NYSOILS) Hurrell-Harring grant (Ulster County contract #2018-546); and

WHEREAS, the purpose of the NYSOILS Hurrell-Harring grant is to improve the quality of mandated indigent legal representation and to recue excessive caseloads in indigent legal service provider programs; and

  WHEREAS, in order to reflect this, an amendment of the 2022 budget is necessary; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, that the 2022 County Budget is hereby amended as follows:
