Legislators Tracey A. Bartels, Jonathan R. Heppner, and Hector S. Rodriguez offer

the following:

 

WHEREAS, the greatest responsibility of the Ulster County Legislature is

ensuring the safety and welfare of all Ulster County residents; and

WHEREAS, the Indian Point nuclear power plant in Buchanan, New York is

only approximately 45 miles south of the County seat on the eastern shore of the

Hudson River; and

WHEREAS, Ulster County families are among the 20 million people living

within Indian Point’s 50 mile peak injury zone; and

WHEREAS, the 40-year operating licenses for Indian Point reactors 2 and 3

expired in 2013 and 2015; and

WHEREAS, Entergy, the current operator, is seeking to renew their operating

licenses for another 20 years despite the facility experiencing eight unplanned

shutdowns in the last 12 months for reasons ranging from hundreds of faulty bolts,

bird feces and water leaks; and

WHEREAS, never before since Indian Point's misguided construction has

there been greater alternative energy technology and sources such as off-shore wind,

solar, hydroelectric and tidal; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, the Ulster County Legislature urges the United States Nuclear

Regulatory Commission to not re-license Indian Point reactors 2 and 3 and for both

the Federal and New York State government to work with affected workers, local

officials, and environmental groups to develop and implement a socially,

economically, and environmentally equitable transition plan to address the needs of

displaced employees, local communities and ratepayers,

and moves it adoption
