Legislator Mary Beth Maio and Legislators Heppner, Litts and Ronk offer the

following:

WHEREAS, the Ulster County Legislature is committed to having a

government of the people, by the people, and for the people; and

WHEREAS, to accomplish such a commitment, the people must know what

its government is doing; and

WHEREAS, it is, therefore, incumbent upon the government to keep the

public informed of its actions especially those acts that may or will have a direct

impact on all or certain individuals; and

WHEREAS, the Ulster County Legislature actively seeks ways to keep the

public informed about Legislative and County business; and

WHEREAS, the general public has become more reliant on the internet for all

of their information especially through the use of smart phones and tablets; and

WHEREAS, the Ulster County Legislature completely revised its website

recently in an effort to have increased transparency by launching a new design with a

more user-friendly interface so as to increase public participation in legislative

business; and

WHEREAS, New York State law requires Ulster County to advertise a variety

of legal notices in local papers to inform the public about certain actions the County

is taking; and

WHEREAS, the New York State Legislature has not yet amended the laws to

include the requirement of posting the legal notices on the internet; and

WHEREAS, the Ulster County Legislature determined that it must continue to

be current and provide information to the public in a way that is easily accessible and

readily available to the public; now therefore be it, 

 

RESOLVED, that it is the policy of Ulster County that every legal notice that

is required by law or regulation shall be published in accordance with such law or

regulation and shall also be posted on the official Ulster County website on the

relevant department’s webpage as well as on a specific webpage dedicated solely to

legal notices; and, be it further

RESOLVED, that where and when a law or regulation directs the posting of a

legal notice on the internet such posting shall be done so in accordance with the law

or regulation,

and moves its adoption.
