Chairman Kenneth J. Ronk, Jr. offers the following:

WHEREAS, pursuant to Resolution No. 370 dated October 21, 2014, the

Ulster County Legislature established a policy for the naming of county-owned

assets; and

WHEREAS, the bridge that spans the Wallkill River on Bruyn Turnpike

located in the Town of Shawangunk (County Bridge 127) is a county-owned asset;

and

WHEREAS, on August 9, 2017, the Town Board of the Town of Shawangunk

unanimously adopted a resolution recognizing “the tireless efforts of Stewart

Crowell, who loved his community and lived his life trying to improve it for all of

the residents of the hamlet of Wallkill,” and requesting that the County of Ulster

name the above mentioned bridge the “Stewart Crowell Bridge;” and

WHEREAS, pursuant to the policy naming county-owned assets, a public

hearing was held on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at 7:00 PM in the Legislative

Chambers, Ulster County Office Building, 6th Floor, 244 Fair Street, Kingston, New

York, to insure public input on the matter was considered; and

WHEREAS, Stewart Addison Crowell was a dedicated teacher and

community servant; and

 WHEREAS, Stewart Crowell served on the Board of Trustees of the Wallkill

Public Library; and

WHEREAS, Stewart Crowell served on the Shawangunk/Gardiner Historical

Society and was appointed to the Collections/Historic Houses Committee of the

Huguenot Historical Society in New Paltz; and

WHEEREAS, Mr. Crowell volunteered for the Meals on Wheels Program;

and 

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Crowell’s grandfather was the first person to walk across

County Bridge 127 when it was first erected, and

WHEREAS, the Ulster County Legislature recognizes the late Stewart

Crowell as a distinguished citizen who has made significant contributions to the

Town of Shawangunk and Ulster County; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, County Bridge Number 127, spanning the Wallkill River on

Bruyn Turnpike located in the Town of Shawangunk shall be dedicated to and hereby

proclaimed the “Stewart Crowell Bridge;”

and move its adoption.
