Legislator Richard A. Parete and Legislators Litts, Loughran, Maloney offer the

following:

 

WHEREAS, pursuant to Resolution No. 370 dated October 21, 2014, the

Ulster County Legislature established a policy for the naming of county-owned

assets; and

WHEREAS, the bridge that spans the Esopus Creek on CR 29A located in the

Town of Hurley is a county-owned asset; and

WHEREAS, on February 27, 2017, the Town Board of the Town of Hurley

unanimously adopted a resolution requesting that the County of Ulster name the

above mentioned bridge the “Jack Gill Bridge;” and

WHEREAS, pursuant to the policy naming county-owned assets, a public

hearing was held on Tuesday, May 9, 2017 at 6:30 PM in the Legislative Chambers,

Ulster County Office Building, 6th Floor, 244 Fair Street, Kingston, New York, to

insure public input on the matter was considered; and

WHEREAS, Jack Gill was an original founding member of the Hurley

Volunteer Fire Department; and

WHEREAS, Jack Gill was a marine who fought in Iwo Jima, was wounded

but returned to fight in just a few days, and was awarded the Purple Heart and

honorable discharge from the Marine Corps; and

WHEREAS, Jack Gill served on the Hurley Town Board for more than 20

years; and

WHEREAS, Jack Gill was the operator of the former Gill Farms, an

agricultural mainstay in the town of Hurley for more than 75 years; and

 

WHEREAS, the Ulster County Legislature recognizes the late Jack Gill as a

distinguished citizen who has made significant contributions to the Town of Hurley

and Ulster County; now, therefore, be it 

 

RESOLVED, County Bridge Number 74, also known as the Hurley Bridge,

spanning the Esopus Creek on CR 29A located in the Town of Hurley shall be

dedicated to and hereby proclaimed the “Jack Gill Bridge;”

and move its adoption.
