Legislators Mary Beth Maio and James H. Delaune, and Legislators Belfiglio,

Fabiano, Gerentine, Lapp, Litts, Lopez, Maloney, R. Parete, Roberts, Ronk, and

Wawro offer the following:

 WHEREAS, this resolution has been filed by the County Executive on behalf

of the Veterans’ Service Agency; and

WHEREAS, Ulster County acknowledges the immeasurable contributions our

Veterans have made; and

WHEREAS, Ulster County established a designated cemetery for Veterans by

Resolution No. 163, dated May 14, 2008; and

WHEREAS, Ulster County acknowledges that in addition to the sacrifices our

Veterans make, their spouses and families make great sacrifices as well including

supporting the Veteran and enduring prolonged periods of absence of their loved one;

and

WHEREAS, the federal Department of Veterans Affairs provides for the

burial and interment of spouses of Veterans in National Veteran Cemeteries without

expense to the family; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, that the spouse of an eligible Veteran, as that term is defined by

regulations promulgated by the Department of Veterans Affairs National Cemetery

Administration, is hereby entitled to be buried in the Ulster County Veterans

Cemetery without incurring burial charges; and, be it further

RESOLVED, that in the event the spouse of an eligible Veteran is indigent,

the County shall pay the associated burial and funeral costs pursuant to the Indigent

Veteran Burial Policy first enacted by the Ulster County Legislature by Resolution

No. 97, dated April 9, 1981 and subsequently amended, most recently by Resolution

No. 369, dated October 21, 2014,

and move its adoption.
