Provenzano, Rodriguez, and Wishnick offer the following:
WHEREAS, this resolution has been submitted by the County Executive; and
WHEREAS, the United States Postal Service has advanced plans to close or
consolidate the Mid-Hudson Processing and Distribution Center (MHPDC) located in
Newburgh; and
WHEREAS, the closure of this facility would result in the severe delay of all
classes of mail delivery in Ulster County as well as the Mid-Hudson region; and
WHEREAS, the delay in mail delivery would negatively affect residents and
local businesses, thereby harming our community; and
WHEREAS, the closure would cause the degradation of service standards to a
point that would result in the virtual elimination of overnight delivery of first class
mail; and
WEHREAS, the closure of MHPDC is not in the best interest of the public;
and
WHEREAS, federal law provides “The Postal Service shall have as its basic
function the obligation to provide postal services to bind the Nation together through
personal, educational, literary, and business correspondence of the people. It shall
provide prompt, reliable and efficient services to patrons in all areas and shall render
postal services to all communities,” [39 U.S.C. §101(a)]; now, therefore, be it
