Chairman of the Legislative Programs, Education and Community Services

Committee, David B. Donaldson, and Deputy Chairman Mary Wawro offer the

following:

WHEREAS, this resolution has been submitted by the County Executive on

behalf of the Veterans’ Service Agency; and

WHEREAS, on August 7, 1782, at his headquarters in Newburgh, New York,

General George Washington established the badge of Military Merit, the precursor to

the modern day Purple Heart Medal; and

WHEREAS, the Purple Heart is awarded to any member of the United States

armed forces who was wounded or killed in action during combat with a declared

enemy of the United States and is the oldest military decoration in use today; and

WHEREAS, Purple Heart recipients have paid the high price of freedom on

behalf of us all and the residents of Ulster County are eternally grateful for their

sacrifices; and

WHEREAS, many Veterans and Purple Heart recipients call Ulster County

home, and are owed the utmost respect and admiration; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, that the Ulster County Legislature hereby proclaims Ulster

County to be a Purple Heart County, as a means of honoring the service and sacrifice

of our nation’s men and women who have put themselves in harm’s way and have

been wounded or killed in action while protecting the freedoms that our Country

holds so dear,

and move its adoption.
