Ulster County Legislator Chris Allen is a Saugerties native, representing Legislative District 2 that includes Barclay Heights, the Village of Saugerties and Malden. Chris is an ardent supporter of bi-partisan politics and prides himself on his problem solving abilities.
Born and raised in Saugerties, Allen is the son of the Albert and Frieda Allen and a graduate of Saugerties High School.
Clearly Allen believes in the importance of lifelong learning. He began his higher education at Ulster County Community College and earn his Associates Degree then went on to earn a Bachelor of Science Degree focused on Speech Communication from SUNY Oneonta, a Bachelor of Science Degree in Organizational Studies from SUNY Binghamton University, a Master’s Degree in Industrial
Labor Relations from Rutgers University and a Master’s Degree in Communication Theory from Northern Colorado University.
Allen is strong advocate for quality health care. Diagnosed with Lyme disease in 2008, he understands firsthand the devastating issues faced by people with chronic illness.
Allen also recognizes the importance of continued funding for mental health treatment within Ulster County. He recently promised, “to fight to keep a continual steam of funding for mental health treatment within Ulster County.”
Allen prides himself on working hard to resolve constituent concerns. Since January 2014, Legislator Allen has worked with government officials in the Town and Village of Saugerties to repair local roads and highways, address residential concerns about clean drinking water and to facilitate a review of telecommunications-related infrastructural weakness around Saugerties. Legislator Allen has also facilitated for the repair of an extremely dangerous railroad crossing along the CSX railroad lines at Doyle’s Lane in Saugerties and worked with county officials to have dangerous trees removed from county property where the trees were posing immediate danger to the safety and welfare of residents in Barclay Heights. Allen has also assisted numerous constituents with various issues and problems related to their vehicle being damaged by a county vehicle and their applications for public assistance. These constituents actually did not live in Legislative District 2, and Legislator Allen assisted them towards resolving their issues which is emblematic of the strong working relationship that he has with his 2 fellow Saugerties Legislators.
Other important issues that Allen advocates for include the protection of critical environmental areas like the Esopus Creek, encouraging Ulster County to market Saugerties to companies that would come to the area without the enticement of property tax breaks, and he hopes to begin discussions with the state university system to build a college campus in Saugerties.
Allen is a tireless supporter of Saugerties and Ulster County and has pledged to address the important issues that plague Saugerties and Ulster County with logically constructed ideas.
