Abe Uchitelle arrived in the Hudson Valley in 2006 as an 18-year-old SUNY New Paltz student and has remained deeply rooted in the community in the decades that followed. He serves as Majority Leader of the Ulster County Legislature, representing District 5 (City of Kingston). Currently in his fourth term, Uchitelle has established himself as a progressive leader focused on housing affordability, government efficiency, and community collaboration. His background in entrepreneurship, team leadership, and small business development brings valuable private sector experience to his public service role.
He has served as Majority Leader since 2024 and currently chairs the Health, Human Services and Housing Committee and serves on the Ways and Means Committee, Â and Laws, Rules and Government Services Committee. His previous leadership roles include Deputy Majority Leader (2020-2023) and Chair of the Law Enforcement and Public Safety Committee.
Uchitelle graduated from SUNY New Paltz with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 2010, where he served as Student Association President. His early civic engagement included serving on the Village Landlord-Tenant Relations Committee, advocating for tenants’ rights, and joining the Town Transportation Committee, where he helped spearhead the creation of the New Paltz Loop bus service—a collaboration between SUNY New Paltz, local governments, and Ulster County.
Governor Kathy Hochul appointed Uchitelle to the SUNY New Paltz College Council in 2023, recognizing his continued connection to higher education and community leadership. He was also recognized as a SUNY New Paltz “40 Under Forty” honoree for his community contributions and professional accomplishments.
