Legislator Richard Parete understands the importance of honoring and recognizing noteworthy persons in Ulster County based on feedback received from the local community.  It is why he sponsored unanimously adopted legislation that establishes a policy for the naming of county-owned assets.

“We have such amazing folks here in Ulster County.  To recognize each and every one of the dedicated and awe inspiring individuals who contribute their skills, knowledge, and time to make Ulster County the place to be and a destination to visit would be momentous and should never be taken lightly,” commented Legislator Parete after Resolution No. 370 passed unanimously at the October 21, 2014 Legislative Session. “With the process established in this Resolution, not only will the municipalities be the ones to recommend any proposed name changes, the general public will supply their voice to the entire process.  Ultimately, there will be no surprises as to who or why a given individual’s superior contributions are being recognized by Ulster County.”

The proposed policy requires the Legislature to make its decision on naming any county assets only after receiving a recommendation from the municipality or municipalities in which the county-owned asset occurs and based upon public input from individuals and organizations.  While Legislative committees will process the recommendation, the public will be encouraged to participate in the discussion at a public hearing held prior to any Legislative decisions.  The designated name is designated for 25 years unless specifically designated for a longer term by the Ulster County Legislature.
