Statement From Chair Peter Criswell on Passing of Former Chair William West

It is with sadness that I share the passing of William “Bill” West, a former Chair of the Ulster County Legislature and a dedicated public servant who leaves a lasting legacy in our community.

Bill’s career in public service began in 1962 when he was elected to the Woodstock Town Board. He went on to serve as Woodstock Town Supervisor in 1966 before being elected to the Ulster County Board of Supervisors, representing District 2. Over the years, Bill played a pivotal role in shaping county government, serving as Majority Leader, Chair of the Legislature, and as a member of various committees, including the Reapportionment Committee and the Town of Woodstock Government Efficiency Committee.

Bill’s contributions extended beyond government. He was instrumental in ensuring the Town of Woodstock acquired the Andy Lee Memorial Field, now a cherished community resource. He also revived the Woodstock Christmas Eve Program, which continues to bring joy to Woodstockers and visitors alike.

In addition to his government service, Bill was deeply involved in civic leadership as Vice Chair of the Ulster County Republican Committee and Chair of the Woodstock Republican Committee.

Please join me in keeping Bill’s family and loved ones in your thoughts during this time of loss.
