Statement from Chair Peter Criswell on December 19, 2024 Special Legislative Session

(Kingston, NY) - Upon receiving the County Executive’s veto of a specific budget amendment, I immediately called a meeting to consider her objections. Overturning this veto would require an affirmative vote of at least two-thirds of the Legislature—16 members. However, I have been informed that, for various reasons, including review of the County Executive’s veto, there are not 16 legislators available to attend this meeting. Additionally, a quorum of at least 12 members is required to hold an official meeting, and it appears that this threshold may not be met.
It is important to be transparent with the public, interested parties, and my fellow legislators about these circumstances. While tonight’s meeting may not be official and no votes may be considered, I have decided to proceed with the meeting to provide an opportunity for legislators and the public to be heard.
Transparency and open dialogue are critical to the legislative process, and this forum will allow for valuable input and discussion on the matter at hand.
